Mapleton Hill

The owners contrast their professional lives at high-tech companies with front-porch evenings under 100 year-old oaks. Their meticulous care and attention turned a tiny craftsman bungalow into a practical, modern home with all the detailing of an earlier era. The program called for a second story master suite with guestroom, a new kitchen, and a new alley carriage house with studio above. A rigorous Landmarks Preservation Board review process allowed the addition of a front porch, but required faithful restoration of rest of the exterior. The added second story steps up gradually to preserve the original scale of the street elevation. For the new interior the architects designed trim of the Craftsman period including wainscot, plate rails, stairs, and arched casings. In the kitchen, the stove is a cast iron French Lacanche.
